ISR4321-AX/K9 Overview

ISR4321-AX/K9 intelligent WAN bundle combines security features, application experience and Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) features together into one platform. The intelligent WAN bundle optimizes network traffic across the “best” link based on applications and monitors network conditions to deliver the best performance as possible. In this platform, you get tight control over application performance, bandwidth usage, data privacy, and availability of your WAN links – control that you need as your branches conduct greater volumes of mission-critical business.

ISR4321-AX/K9 comes with IP base image, Security, AppX licensing for 200 TCP connection resources for ISR WAAS optimization and 4-GB DRAM, 4GB Flash memory, 50Mbps WAN bandwidth by default, to enable the ISR WAAS service, update memory, flash memory and hard drive is required, vWAAS service is not available on this platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ISR4321-AX/K9 is a Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Router that includes the AX (Application Experience) bundle. It combines enterprise WAN routing with advanced application visibility, security, and branch network services, making it a popular router for small to mid-size branch offices.
“AX” stands for Application Experience. This bundle adds advanced application features such as application optimization, visibility, and security services beyond the base ISR4321 hardware. Many buyers search this because AX licensing is commonly compared with SEC, V, and base ISR versions.
The ISR4321-AX/K9 is commonly deployed for: Enterprise branch WAN routing Application-aware networking Secure VPN connectivity Intelligent WAN (IWAN) deployments Small business branch connectivity It is designed to give tighter control over bandwidth, WAN reliability, and application performance.
The ISR4321-AX/K9 supports 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps aggregate throughput, depending on licensing and configuration. This makes it suitable for small to medium branch environments handling business-critical traffic.
Typical hardware includes: 2 × Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports 1 × SFP port 2 × NIM expansion slots 1 × onboard ISC slot USB & console management ports This modular design allows flexible WAN and service expansion.
Yes. The ISR4321 platform can run Cisco IOS XE and is commonly used in SD-WAN deployments, allowing centralized policy control, intelligent path selection, and better application performance across branch networks.
Key difference: ISR4321/K9 → Base routing platform ISR4321-AX/K9 → Includes Application Experience bundle with enhanced app and security capabilities The AX version is preferred when application visibility and optimization are required.
Yes. It supports secure WAN connectivity and intelligent traffic management, allowing branch offices to connect securely to cloud platforms and hybrid data center environments while maintaining application performance.
Search demand remains strong because: Large installed enterprise base AX bundle includes multiple licenses (APP + SEC features) Reliable branch performance SD-WAN migration compatibility Many organizations still maintain or expand ISR 4000 branch deployments. Key difference: ISR4321/K9 → Base routing platform ISR4321-AX/K9 → Includes Application Experience bundle with enhanced app and security capabilities The AX version is preferred when application visibility and optimization are required.
